The Glen Cairn/Hazeldean area originally consisted primarily of farmland and was considered the outskirts of town until the 1960s. By 1962 the area was rezoned as a residential community to accommodate a $37 million housing development, and the master-planned community we know today was created-the first of its kind in Canada.
Most homes in the Glen Cairn/Hazeldean community were built between 1962-1988 and embody the mid-century architectural style of the time. Traditional homes with minimalist features in ranch or bungalow styles populate the area on large manicured lots along mature, tree-lined streets.
This community was developed with modern innovations including underground wiring, traffic-calming curved roads, designated schools for each area, community centres, and even an outdoor pool. Glen Cairn/Hazeldean was considered the most advanced community for its time.
Through the ’70s and ‘80s this neighbourhood developed substantially thanks to a government program that encouraged families to buy homes in the area. This incentive along with new schools and the development of shopping centres and convenient amenities attracted many families to Glen Cairn/Hazeldean and it quickly became known as the “Canadian Dream” community.
This neighbourhood is an ideal family community as it’s surrounded by top-rated schools and numerous parks, and features excellent recreation facilities including the Kanata Leisure Centre and Wave Pool, Glen Cairn Community Centre, and Jack Charron Arena. Glen Cairn/Hazeldean also caters to those who enjoy an active lifestyle as it’s home to the beautiful Trans Canada Trail which runs from the east coast to the north-west coast of Canada.
