Top 5 Family-Friendly Neighbourhoods in Ottawa West

December 24, 2019 | Buying a Home

What makes a community great for families? Is it high-quality schools? Access to the great outdoors? What about convenient amenities—like nearby grocers, large retailers, and doctor’s offices?

As far as we’re concerned, it’s all of the above. That’s part of the reason we feel so fortunate to live and work in Ottawa West. Our neck of the woods is full of charming, family-friendly neighbourhoods—and there are few things we enjoy more than pointing them out to new home buyers.

If you’re looking for the perfect family-friend neighbourhoods in Ottawa West, here are five areas you should consider…

1) Kanata

It’s no secret that we love Kanata. This beautiful suburb has everything a growing family needs to thrive.

A great mix of homes? Check. Here you’ll find an abundance of brand new and slightly older houses in communities like Kanata Lakes and Glen Cairn. Kid-friendly amenities? Check. There’s no shortage of great restaurants (like Zak’s Diner) and popular retailers (such as those at Tanger Outlets) in the area. Great schools? Yep, Kanata has plenty of those too. In fact, Stephen Leacock Public School is considered one of the best in the city. If you ask us, the only thing missing from Kanata is you and your family!

2) Nepean

If you’re looking for the perfect family-friendly community in Ottawa West, it doesn’t get better than Nepean.

Let’s start with the homes. Whether you’re looking for a beautiful house or a stylish townhome, your dream living space is waiting in Nepean. The lots tend to be spacious here, which is perfect for families who need room to spread out. If your little ones love the outdoors, you’ll also enjoy Nepean’s many community green spaces. One of our favourites is Andrew Haydon Park, which features a play structure and splash pad—perfect for Ottawa’s hottest summer days! Like Kanata, Nepean is also home to some fantastic schools, including St. Andrew Elementary.

3) Barrhaven

Just outside the city, Barrhaven is a quiet, community-oriented suburb. It’s also a fantastic place to raise kids.

There’s no shortage of beautiful new housing stock in this southwest area. Homes in developments like Woodroffe Estates are in high demand, and it’s no wonder. Living here means being in close proximity to parks and playgrounds along with convenient amenities such as shopping centres, grocery stores, and medical offices. Did we mention the schools? John McCrae Secondary School, which has earned a high ranking from the esteemed Fraser Institute, is one of our top picks.

4) Westboro

Looking for a family-friendly neighbourhood that’s brimming with character? We know the perfect place.

In Westboro, you’re just as likely to find a sleek modern condo as an older Arts and Craft-style home. Urban revitalization has turned the area into a hip destination for young families, who you’ll see browsing its many boutiques with strollers in tow. Westboro Village is the main strip for shopping and dining. From farm-to-table grocery stores to trendy (and kid-friendly) eateries to one-of-a-kind local shops, you’ll find it all here. The community is also within walking distance of the river, and it’s well served by OC Transpo.

5) Stittsville

Stittsville is one of those suburban communities with a small-town vibe. Families here enjoy plenty of peace and quiet—as well as their ultra-friendly neighbours.

If it’s a house with several bedrooms you’re after, you’ll find plenty of newer options here. Nearby green spaces, like the beloved Coyote Run Park, are just a stone’s throw from most homes. And when it comes to modern conveniences, you’ll find more than chain restaurants and box stores in the vicinity. Unique watering holes (like the Jack Ketch) and cozy cafes (such as Quitters) lend this suburb a whole lot of charm!

Kids in Stittsville can also get an education close to home. There are a variety of options nearby for little ones, and a public high school is also slated to open in the community soon.
